Split an Ebook PDF Into Individual Chapters

Last updated: February 24, 2026

You have an ebook or textbook as a single PDF and want individual chapter files — for focused studying, sharing specific sections, or loading single chapters onto an e-reader. If the PDF has bookmarks (most ebooks do), OneClickPDF can split at each bookmark automatically.

The Problem

A large ebook PDF is unwieldy for studying or sharing. You want individual chapter files but manually figuring out page ranges for each chapter is tedious, especially in a 500+ page textbook.

How It Works

1

Open Split by Bookmarks

Go to OneClickPDF's Split by Bookmarks tool.

2

Upload the ebook

Drop the PDF ebook. The tool reads the bookmark tree and displays the chapter structure.

3

Choose the split level

Select top-level only for main chapters, or include sub-levels to also split at sub-chapters and sections.

4

Download individual chapters

Each chapter becomes a named PDF file (e.g., 'Chapter 1 - Introduction.pdf'). Download all chapters in a ZIP.

Split by Bookmarks

Automatically split a PDF at each bookmark or chapter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if the ebook has no bookmarks?
Some ebooks lack bookmarks. Use the Edit Bookmarks tool to add them manually, or use Split by Text if chapters start with consistent heading text (e.g., 'Chapter').
Will the table of contents still work?
Internal links in the table of contents that point to pages within the same chapter will work. Links to other chapters will point to pages that no longer exist in the individual file.
Can I split a 1000-page textbook?
Yes. Processing happens locally in your browser. Large PDFs take longer but work fine. The tool handles documents of any size within your device's memory.

Turn a monolithic ebook into organized chapter files in seconds. Named after the bookmark titles, each file is ready for focused reading, sharing, or uploading to your e-reader.
