Why does my iPhone use HEIC?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) uses ~50% less storage than JPG at the same quality. Apple made it the default starting with iOS 11. The downside is limited compatibility outside the Apple ecosystem.

Will I lose quality converting HEIC to JPG?

Minimal quality loss at high JPG quality settings (90%+). HEIC and JPG both use lossy compression, so the conversion is a re-encoding. At default quality settings, the difference is imperceptible.

Can I change my iPhone to shoot JPG instead?
